What to Do After a Keratin Treatment: 72-Hour Checklist

By Fame Beauty Salon | October 12, 2026

Raleigh weather can be a little unpredictable, especially during our hot, humid summers and rainy stretches. This checklist keeps your keratin treatment looking smooth and shiny, even when life happens.

What to Do After a Keratin Treatment: 72-Hour Checklist image

One of our clients came in for an anti-frizz service that included a wash, haircut, blowdry, and straightening, and loved how “shiny and smooth” her hair looked afterward. To keep that same smooth finish after a keratin hair treatment, the most important rule is simple: don’t wash, tie, clip, or crease your hair for the first 48 to 72 hours.

We’re in Raleigh’s Westgate corridor in North Raleigh, near North Hills and Six Forks, so a lot of people swing by for a quick touch-up after errands. If you protect the first three days, you usually protect the whole result.

Quick rule: Keep hair loose and dry for 48 to 72 hours. No ponytails. No clips. No tucked-behind-the-ear creases if you can help it.

First 24 to 48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that protect the seal

Keratin therapy for hair works best when you give it uninterrupted time to set. We generally recommend treating those first two days like a “no-crease zone.” Think smooth, straight, loose.

Do this right away

  • Sleep with your hair down. If you have one, a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce friction.
  • If hair gets a little bent from a car headrest or hoodie, smooth it gently with your hands and let it fall back into place.
  • If you sweat, blot at the roots and hairline with a clean towel and let it air-dry. Avoid rubbing.

Avoid for 48 to 72 hours: washing, dry shampoo, ponytails, buns, tight headbands, clips, barrettes, behind-the-ear tucks, steam rooms, saunas, and intense workouts that drench your roots.

And yes, this matters even more in Raleigh summer humidity. If you’re commuting across Raleigh, Cary, Durham, or Morrisville and you know you’ll hit afternoon showers, pack a small umbrella or a hood that won’t smash your hair flat. Light rain is manageable. A soaked head of hair in hour 12 is where people run into trouble.

Days 3 to 7: keep the “silky, soft” feel without backsliding

Once you’re past the first 72 hours, you can get back to normal hair life, just with smarter guardrails. We hear it all the time after keratin treatments: hair feels “silkiest” and “softest, ” and it’s noticeably more manageable. The goal this week is to keep that shine and smoothness consistent.

Sweat and heat

Workouts are fine after the first few days, but try not to leave sweaty hair twisted up for hours. If your roots get damp, dry them sooner rather than later. A loose braid is usually better than a tight ponytail if you need hair contained.

Chlorine and saltwater

Stay out of chlorinated pools and saltwater for at least a week. If you get exposed anyway, rinse immediately with fresh water and follow with a leave-in conditioner. It’s a simple step, but it protects the finish you paid for.

If your hair was dry, damaged, or very curly before

We see a lot of textured hair and “hard to manage” hair, including curly 3b/3c patterns and hair that’s been through bleach. That’s where keratin treatment aftercare really pays off. Keep detangling gentle, don’t overdo heat tools, and focus on moisture plus the right shampoo. That’s how you hold onto the smooth, healthy look.

Shampoo, conditioner, and styling habits that keep keratin results smooth

Your biggest long-term win is using the right cleanser. Stick with sulfate-free and salt-free shampoo and conditioner. Skip clarifying and anti-residue shampoos unless we specifically tell you to use one, because those formulas can strip what you’re trying to keep.

If you air-dry: use a lightweight leave-in to cut frizz, then don’t touch your hair every five minutes while it dries.

If you blowdry: keep it on low to medium heat and aim airflow down the hair shaft. A smooth blowdry helps the result last longer.

If you found us searching “hair salon near me” and you’re new to keratin, plan your first wash after the 72-hour mark and keep it gentle. If you want to compare other smoothing and repair options we do in the Westgate corridor, take a look at our hair treatments guide in Westgate Raleigh.

Rain, creases, and frizz emergencies in Raleigh: when to reach out

Real life doesn’t pause for a keratin hair treatment. If you get caught in rain, notice a crease, or your hair starts to puff at the roots during a humid commute, don’t panic.

If something goes wrong in the first 72 hours

  • Rain or damp spots: gently blot, then blowdry on low to medium heat until fully dry.
  • Crease from a clip, hat, or sleep: smooth hair flat with your fingers, then lightly blowdry while brushing the section straight.
  • Heavy sweat: blot at the scalp, air-dry, and avoid tying it up damp.

“She's been doing my hair for over a year now and I always get great results. She does an excellent job and is very kind.”

Our promise: If you’re unsure, call us. We’d much rather help you fix a small crease quickly than have you struggle with it for a week.

We’re easy to get to in North Raleigh near North Hills and Six Forks, and this same aftercare applies to our clients coming in from Wake Forest, Cary, Durham, Morrisville, and Garner. If you want a refresh appointment later on, we’ll talk through timing and your at-home routine so your smoothness stays consistent.

A quick note on the service itself (so the aftercare makes sense)

During a Keratin Treatment, you’ll receive a smoothing treatment that tames frizz and enhances shine. Plan for about 150 minutes for this service. If you’re pricing out options, our keratin treatment starts at $180, and we’ll confirm timing and expectations when you book.
